Name of the Dental Plan: Sometime it is not good enough just to know the insurance company name in your search if you are looking for the insurance plan your dentist takes.
Example: Many dentist take Delta Dental, but just knowing that is not enough information to start your search since there are many different Delta Dental Plans (such as their PPO Plans Gold Diamond, and Platinum to name a few. Delta Dental also has HMO plans depending on the state you live in.)Â Ask your dentist which Delta Dental plan they take so that you do not buy the wrong one. Many dental insurance companies offer multiple plan options with different plan names.

Type of Dental Insurance: Have an idea what type of dental insurance you are searching for such as HMO, PPO Indemnity and or even Discount Plans. By searching for a plan type this will also help to to avoid pulling up say a dental discount plan when wanting dental insurance.

What you type in your search: When searching online try to be more specific in your search. Do not just type “dental insurance” or you will may get too large of a selection that may not even apply to you in your state.
Do put something like California Dental Insurance for individual and or family or California HMO or PPO dental insurance plans. By doing this you will hopefully only pull plans that you want and not plan in TX if you live in CA

According to research, three out of four adults will experience gum (periodontal) disease at some time in their life. However, gum disease can often be prevented or treated in its early stages.  Severe periodontal disease causes damage to the gums, bone and other structures that support the teeth. Regular dental checkups along with brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, are the best ways of preventing costly dental problems.

Question: I am 52 years old and been fighting for years to keep my teeth. After years of having major dental services dealing with dental pain all the time and not to count the expense I am tired of it all. I am thinking of pulling the teeth I have left and getting complete dentures.
The dentist I going to now does not want to pull my teeth saying they do not need to be pulled and I should continue having dental care for them. Sure once there pulled and I get dentures there will be no more dental bills. I looking for a dental insurance plan that will let me have dentures if that is what I want and not say it is elective and not cover them. Please advise.
Answer: I suggest reviewing our dental discount plans. It sounds like you would want the flexibility that a dental discount plans gives you. With a dental discount plan what you have done is up to your and the dentist within the plan. The company does not state what you can or can not have done.
You get discounted savings for all your dental needs at the time the services are render. If you want dentures you pay only the discounted cost for them as listed on the fee schedule. The thing is that you would need to find a dentist in the plan that is willing to pull out teeth that may not have to be pulled. So make phone calls and make sure you have a dentist in the plan will to work with you and your needs.

Question: Do Seniors need to brush and floss more frequently?
Answer: Although it is important for senior to keep maintaining good oral health habits because they are more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. However dental habits do not change just because of your age. Seniors still need to floss daily and brush their teeth at least twice a day.
If you have arthritis or other condition that limits movement, try an electric toothbrush. Be sure to clean between teeth daily with floss. If floss is too difficult to work with, try a floss pick or tiny brushes made specifically to clean between teeth. Seeing a dentist regularly is very important to maintain your dental health and catch any minor dental issues before they turn into larger ones.

Think twice before using your teeth as tools. Many people get into a bad habit of opening a stubborn chip bag or holding objects in their mouth however doing so can cause chipped or cracked teeth. You do not live in the Stone Age, so there is really no excuse to use your teeth to open a bottle of beer, the bottle opener was made for that. Tools are easier to replace than your teeth, which were really meant to last you a lifetime.

It is important to make sure you are brushing your teeth every day twice a day for at least two minutes as part of your daily dental care habit. For a healthy mouth the ADA recommends you follow these tips.
1) Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
2) Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
3) Make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
