My eight year old daughter may need to have braces in the future. My current dental plan will only pay out 200.00 a year for four years. I guess that is better then nothing but not much better.
Is there any way I can get another dental plan for her so that if we do get her braces I can have better coverage’s or I will be able to combine both plans to get better savings off the cost of my daughter braces?
Reply: I would suggest reviewing our dental HMO insurance plans though, Delta Dental PrimareCare and California Dental depending you what state you are in these HMO plans may best work for your daughter orthodontic care needs.
Another option would be reviewing our dental discount plan thought Careington or Atena Dental Choice Plus. These discount plans will help you save 20 percent off the cost of any types of braces for kids and adults alike.

I live in Westchester NY and I have a family of four with no current dental insurance. I have seen many dental discount plan but I am not sure if you get what you pay for with them since they are so cheap are you really get much of any saving?
Reply: Most dental discount plans for a family run around $12.00 – $15.00 a month so I agree they are low cost plans. You do fully get your money worth out of a dental discount plan assuming that you use it. My best advise is to call the dentist in the plan network that are in your area and confirm that they are still accepting the plan. You have to go to plan providers for a dentist plan to be valid and save you money.

Understanding the Basics
Dental crowns are coverings applied over the tooth’s surface, and may be made of ceramic, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal (PFM), resin, or metal, including gold. Dental crowns are also useful in patients who grind their teeth or have bite problems, addressing the stressed area and stabilizing it to prevent damage. Dental crowns usually require 2 to 3 visits to your dentist, depending upon the health of the tooth receiving the crown. Today’s health insurance, including your dental plan, is designed to help you get the care you need at a reasonable cost. If you cannot afford a dentist, or are not covered by dental insurance, go to a dental school clinic, where dentists in training work on your teeth. I think they also offer periodic cleaning at reduced rates as well, by dental hygienists in training.

British scientist warned back in 2010 that dental X-rays given to millions of Britons every year may increase the risk of of thyroid cancer.    Researchers found that patients who had been X-rayed by their dentist at least ten times were more likely to develop the disease. They warn that X-rays should not be given at check-ups or when registering new patients and that dental X-rays should be only be prescribed when the patient has a specific clinical need.    With rates of thyroid cancer more than doubling in 30 years, the scientists said that the potential dangers of dental X-rays were often overlooked.

Can I Use It For Fillings At The Dentist
While most dental insurance coverage will only cover a percentage, usually 50% to 80%, of fillings. Insurance companies will not always pay for composite fillings on back teeth. As mentioned above, dental insurance typically does not cover the additional costs associated with composite fillings. With dental insurance, gold fillings typically run between $10 and $50, while ceramic fillings range between $40 and $100. Dental insurance is intended to help offset the costs associated with dental care.
Dental Insurance Plan Choices: Indemnity Plan: An indemnity dental insurance plan allows you to select your own dentist. If you have dental insurance, familiarize yourself with your plan so you know what is covered and how. Fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, fluoride treatments, braces, gum surgery , dental implant, and many other procedures are all covered by full coverage dental insurance.
Most dental insurance plans cover the cost of dental amalgam and gold fillings, since they are used for functional, rather than exclusively cosmetic, purposes. Many insurance companies will only reimburse composite filling costs at a rate equal to that of an amalgam filling. Dental insurance plans differ in the level of reimbursement offered for certain procedures and in annual dental spending caps.
Dental finance managers can call your insurance provider to pre-determine the out-of-pocket costs associated with your planned procedure. Most dental insurance plans cover the cost of dental amalgam and gold fillings, since they are used for functional, rather than exclusively cosmetic, purposes.
Dental insurance plans usually consider the replacing of metal fillings with composite resin fillings to improve your smile a cosmetic procedure. Typically your dental insurance coverage may reimburse you for these types of dental fillings. For example, virtually all of Delta Dental’s plans cover resin fillings on the teeth where their cosmetic benefit is critical: the six front teeth (incisors and cuspids) and on the facial (cheek side) surfaces of the next two teeth (bicuspids).

For some people their tooth can become sensitive for a days to weeks after having a filling. There are many reason why this can happen but the most common reason is that part of the tooth and all of the dental decay must be removed for a filling to be placed. In some cases, this procedure can cause sensitivity in the tooth. As a general rule, the deeper the cavity and closer to the tooth nerve, the more likely there will be discomfort after the dental procedure. If the pain last for over a week it is advise to go back to the dentist to have the tooth re-evaluated.

Dental insurance will often cover the cost of dental sealants; however, this is dependent on the level of insurance you purchased. Insurance benefits for sealant procedures have increased considerably, especially as companies start to realize that sealants are a proven preventive technique. You should check with your insurance company about coverage though and with your dentist to see how much they will cost. Before you take up insurance on teeth, talk with your insurance agent as to if cover is provided for teeth sealant application.

Children should receive sealants on permanent molars as soon as they erupt (about ages 6 and 12 years). Children with unmet dental needs suffer the daily distraction of chronic toothaches, the acute and searing pain of dental abscesses, disfigured smile, dysfunctional speech, and difficulty eating. Children with dental decay who lack access to dental care are often not brought to seek care until decay is severe.
Children are not stigmatized by being singled out during the screening and sealing process. Children need dental sealants applied again when new molars emerge, usually around twelve years of age. Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in before decay attacks the teeth. Children who would benefit most from sealants include those with existing pits and fissures that may develop cavities or those with risk factors for cavities. Children with sealants still should: Brush twice a day with a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Having and using the right tooth brush for your is an important consideration especially when you are using your toothbrush on your teeth at least twice a day.     Here are some tips when picking out your next toothbrush. Using a toothbrush that has soft bristles is suggested in order to prevent scratching and damage of the gums. Toothbrush heads come in many different sizes. Pick a toothbrush that best fits your mouth.
M-shaped bristles brushes help to ensure that the bristles reach all tooth crevices. The M-shape ensures that the shape of the teeth is taken in to consideration to allow the bristles to reach all the gaps and remove the food particles collected.   If possible try and pick a tooth brush that has a tongue cleaner on the back of the brush head.

Treatment is cost effective because sealing a tooth costs less than filling one. The cost of dental sealants can range from approximately $25 to $50 per tooth. Of course, this may be a small price to pay compared to the discomfort and cost associated with dental procedures that may become necessary if your teeth remain unprotected.
The cost of dental sealants varies with location and practice, but is considered inexpensive compared to repairs and fillings. Dental sealants have been proven a safe and cost-efficient dental procedure. Sealants cost less than getting a single cavity filled.

Oral health care at home does not stop at brushing and flossing your teeth. Many people forget about their tongue, however the tongue is a haven for most oral bacteria. By using a tongue cleaner you help to ensure proper and thorough cleaning of the accumulated bacteria, food particles and dead cells. Another reason to clean your tongue daily is that it will also ensure fresh breath.

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Dental sealants are effective in preventing dental caries in the occlusal (chewing) and other pitted and fissured surfaces of the teeth. Dental sealants were assessed in permanent molars (occlusal and buccal surfaces in lower molars and occlusal and lingual surfaces in upper molars), premolars (occlusal surface), and upper lateral incisors (lingual surface).
Dental sealants are highly effective in preventing dental caries that occur on the surfaces of teeth that have pits and fissures. Dental sealants are usually applied in a dentist’s office. Dental sealants last for 4-5 years and can easily be reapplied by your dentist when they do wear off. Dental sealants represent one of the greatest, but least known advances, of modern dentistry.
