How does dental insurance work?

Sunday, Dec. 14th 2014 8:57 AM

Question: I do not currently have dental insurance, but I would like to start going to the dentist since it been a while since I last went. I been advised that I should get dental insurance first so my cost for dental services are more affordable. How does dental insurance work?

Answer: To answer your question correctly, it would depend on the type of dental plan you would want. There are four types of dental insurance and plans available, Dental PPO’s Dental HMO’s Dental Indemnity and Dental Discount plans.  Although PPO and Indemnity are similar they are not the same. That goes for HMO’s and Dental discount plans.  I can say that all these types of dental insurance and plans do work to help save money on the cost of your dental care needs.   To be vague:

Dental insurance plans works in much the same way that health insurance works. For a stated monthly and or annual premium (rate), you are entitled to certain dental benefits under the plan which will usually include regular checkups, basic cleanings, x-rays, and certain services required to promote over all good general oral health.

Some plans will provide broader benefits and or coverages than others and may require a greater financial contribution on your part when services are rendered. Some plans may also provide coverage for certain types of oral surgery, treatment of gum disease, or orthodontia (braces) What is very important is that you take your time and read each plans terms and conditions so that you buy the plan that best fits your dental care needs.

In order to review our dental insurance and plan options just enter your zip code in the quote box provided above.  If you should have any questions about any of our dental plan options just call member services at 310-534-3444 as they will be happy to help you.

Dental Insurance Plus on Natural Tooth Color.

Friday, Dec. 12th 2014 8:33 AM

In today’s society many people associate shiny white teeth with a healthy appearance.  Therefore more and more people are bleaching their teeth to achieve the bright white teeth they think is more the norm.   However are teeth really meant to look so white?

Younger people will have the most naturally white teeth of anyone but even their teeth will not be perfectly white.  This is because on the whole, white is not a natural color. Certainly close shades are in existence and are very flattering, but there is no escaping the slow color shift from near white to nearer yellow.  For a more natural tooth color talk to your dentist.  We all seen people that have over bleach their teeth to the point that they tend to look fake.

Dental Insurance Plus, Limitations Under and HMO Insurance Plan.

Monday, Dec. 8th 2014 8:17 AM

Though for the most part dental HMO plans may have fewer limitations then dental PPO’s and Indemnity insurance plans they still have limitations that need to be carefully read and understood.  One such limitation which many people know is that you have to go to a dentist that is a provider of the plan.  There is no benefits if you choose to go to a dentist that is not a provider of an HMO plan.

Generally under an HMO dental insurance plan, coverages are based on a fee schedule which shows the cost for all the different dental services that are covered under the plan. Yet the fee schedule that is provided is normally only for the general dentist you pick to be your provider and it is not the benefits may receive if you need to be refer to a network specialist.

This is important to know since HMO plans will either not cover for specialist or only provide saving of around 20 – 30 percent off network specialist depending on the plan. Although HMO plans will not normally have a yearly dollar max limitation per person per year they may have limitation on how many of one dental service you can have. You may already know the two cleaning per person per year but many HMO’s insurance plans will only provide benefits on four to five crowns per person per year.

Dental Insurance Plus on Maximum Annual Limitations.

Thursday, Dec. 4th 2014 7:39 AM

What is a Annual Maximum Limitation and how does it effect you?  When shopping for dental insurance for yourself or family it is important to know if the plan you are buying has any maximum limitations.  Generally maximum limitations are common to PPO and Indemnity insurance plans.   A maximum limitations is the dollar amount that the company is willing to spend per person per year.  Such as if you get a PPO plan with a $1000.00 this is the dollar amount the company is going to pay up to in claims per person per year.

There for if you have large dental care issues that are higher in cost you may want to find a plan with a higher maximum limitation such as $2000.00.  A maximum limitation can also be applied to a dental services. When this is the case make sure you know what the terms are. Many plans have have limitations on orthodontic services. (such as the plan may pay out X dollar amount per person per year up to X dollar amount a life time.)

Another example of a maximum limitations on dental services: Prosthetic services (crowns, bridges, partial and complete dentures) for members of age 65 or older benefit is limited to X dollars per person per year regardless of the maximum limitation on the plan. Such as if you have a 2000 yearly max but over 65 and need dentures you may only have $600 maximum limitation per year for that type of dental service under the plan. Make sure you read each plan terms and conditions carefully before buying. All plans should have their terms and conditions disclosed.

Dental Insurance Plus, Can a tooth that been knocked out be repaired?

Friday, Nov. 14th 2014 6:43 AM

The answer is yes it can. If you or your child knocks out a tooth, keep in mind the sooner you can get to your dentist’s office, the better.  If a tooth has been knocked out, gently rinse any debris from the root and attempt to place it back into the socket. If that’s not possible, hold it in the mouth on the way to the dentist. If that is still not an opinion then keep the tooth in milk until you get to the dentist’s office.

Dental Insurance Plus, Unexpected Expenses That May Come With Having Braces.

Wednesday, Nov. 12th 2014 8:00 AM

There can be some unexpected expenses to keep in mind when getting braces, the orthodontist’s bill may not be the only cost you incur.

Particularly with adult patients, getting braces may also mean having to have a deep cleaning as well as having to replace old fillings before treatment begins. For adults and children, removing teeth is sometimes part of the pretreatment plan.

In addition, clear, invisible or colored braces often cost more, but for obvious reasons can be more appealing than the less expensive traditional metal braces. It is important to keep these type of expenses in mind when planing your budget for your orthodontic care.
